Kenora

Kenora

The Deck and House on the Island

My Welcome Party

Wednesday: After a difficult night in Birds Hill with the party animals and midnight generators going on I was glad to pack up and head out for Kenora on another of the roads less travelled. The trees seemed to grow taller with every km, soon rock slabs began rising up along roadsides and I knew I wasn't on the prairies anymore.  My friends Nancy and Mike called enroute and encouraged me to come straight there. It was a hot day and they would pick me up at the dock and take me over to their home on one of the 14,000 islands on Lake of the Woods.  The view from the bridge coming into Kenora was spectacular blue sky, blue lake dotted with islands of green.   After 5 days on the road it is good to have a change of pace: sit by the water, listen to the loons, watch the sunset and the stars in the company of my friends.

Thursday: Today was hot but cool in the shade on the deck. Lovely to spend the morning catching up and working on photo's in the morning.  In the afternoon we took the boat exploring.  We did a water tour of Kenora, a big loupe of the north east part of the lake through. Mike was part of a volunteer group that selected campsites for the Trans Canada Trail Path of the Paddle and we checked them out. Canadian Geographic has a good story here.  https://tctrail.ca/assets/pdf/In-the-news/Canadian-Geographic-JulyAug-2012.pdf

The Devil's Point

In the evening we took the boat further down to a beautiful remote part of the lake for a great dinner at Crow Rock fishing camp, coming back with a beautiful sunset.

Kenora Day 3

It was a great day.  Walked the winter road in the morning.  When the lake freezes they make a winter road from Kenora, across their island and then it breaks off in different directions, strong enough to hold heavy equipment and construction materials.  In the afternoon lazed about and got dinner ready for friends Nancy had grown up with on the lake.  Their mothers had all grown up in Kenora and been friends for over 70 years.  Everyone brought pictures of the old days and it was great to hear the stories.  A big lightening storm came just as they were taking people back to Kenora.  They were very brave driving back in the rain and the dark.

Later Mike got maps out and gave me good ideas for getting me through the next leg of my journe
