Cheyenne, The Daddy of Them All

Woke up this morning and opened my curtains to a bright blue sky, not a cloud anywhere. What a relief.  Had a complimentary breakfast and was on the road before 8. Not only was the sun out but about 80% of the trucks were gone, headed to places with more people than Cheyenne Wyoming. It was such an easy drive.

The western part of Nebraska was more Alberta like, flatter, bigger fields and it felt like it went on for a long way before I finally crossed over the state line. I also didn’t realize how high Wyoming is.  On the pass there was a lot of snow left over from last weeks storms and it was still windy and cold.  It felt like driving across the top of the world, few trees, wide planes and big sky.  When I got to the hotel there was a stage coach in the lobby with a big sign saying ‘Home to the Daddy of them All’ referring to the Cheyenne rodeo.  Ian Tyson wrote a song about it.

My friend made it in record time and we set out to explore the town before dinner.  There is lots of history, Cheyenne was the rail terminus for the cattle drives up from Texas. It was also the a major stop for immigrants. For a small place there was a lot of  good architecture and a strong sense of identity.  We went for dinner and both exhausted crashed early.
